I have heard the same thing about their marketing failures. But the recent losses and collapse appear to have focused their minds enormously, and lots of new management has been brought in (see recent news announcements). They are now giving away a "lite" version of ST on the website, while tending to the Java products -- presumably porting furiously. They do have a lot of goodwill in the corporate community, as you attest -- so if they get out there with high-quality Java development tools, they will at least have their foot in the door already.
