Yes, I believe when anyone speaks about getting video over something like a 56K modem, it will be choppy, the resolution will not be that great, and it won't be running at 30 fps.
To get high quality motion video over copper wire WILL require compression and it looks as though it is in the books that MPEG2 will be used (the same compression standard to be used in the upcoming Digital Versatile Disks (DVDs))
And, from what I have read, you need 3 Mbps to get MPEG2 to shoot those video streams with high quality. Although, I personally asked the CEO of C-Cube (Balkanski) about xDSL at the Robertson Stevens Conference (I kind of snuck in :-) a few months ago and he told me that you may need at least 3 Mbps for MPEG2 to look good, implying that ~4 Mbps second might be more realistic.
Either way, it will be a little while before we have the ability to get over 3 Mbps out of our current Backbones, COs, Servers, Browsers, Routers...something I know is possible, but may take a couple years...the reason I still love AMTX is that #1)this will happen #2)getting anything over 128K (ISDN) will still be very much a godsend for many applications and there will be demand if the price is low enough...xDSL does not have to get 6 Mbps right away for it to be successful!!!!!, especially if it is such an eventuality (please read the latest comments from the CEO of USWest) and there is not a soon enough time to begin the transition/upgrade in my mind (I wish the Bells had a quicker mind). #3)Amati has the right connections (NEC, MOT, TI ,Philips?) and the best products thus far in the xDSL battle #4)the DMT standard does not hurt #5)the recent news about VDSL in H.K. (AMTX + NEC)should tell you something that is very important and often overlooked (ie. AMTX is thinking GLOBAL and H.K. is going to probably be installing VDSL (30 Mbps in each direction?) when America is gonna start offering ADSL...wow, really! #6)I am sure there are more surprises, and I really find myself blabbing here so I will quit talking about stuff we all know...:-)
Please correct me if I am wrong on any of my info, folks
Thanks I've Wanted My DMT since I heard the phrase running around in me own head. :-) pigboy |
