I'd like to propose the coining of a new term:

"Application Saturation"

This refers to a theory I have -- a slowdown, or even a cessation, of PC demand curve shifting due to the absence of compelling mass market applications that offer a significant value proposition to consumers. Meanwhile, nearly everyone that wants to do the old stuff can already do it with their existing hardware. You know the story.

The IDC adjustment reflects application saturation, IMHO.

Your idea about AOL buying up a PC shop is an interesting one. AOL could synthesize earnings growth by doing so, thanks to their currently high multiple. But from a buyer's perspective bundled computers are a bad idea just like getting your phone from the phone company. Who does that anymore? The only potential advantage would be obtaining a rig preconfigured with turnkey net access via AOL. That sounds like a turn-off to me! <g>

If you have 2-3 PCs running Win95 you don't need a server. Win95 supports peer-to-peer networking -- all you need is $40 worth of network cards and BNC cables, and you're set to go. Provided you know how to configure Win95 networking -- not a simple task to the uninitiated. Then you would have to install and configure a proxy server on your dialup machine -- an even more difficult task. There may be a market here for a "Mechanic" program like SpeedLane that modfies your Win95/98 setup for a simple LAN and proxy configuration. What do you think?

God bless,
PX
