No such thing as a stupid question !
As far as I know there is no limit on the time that you can have a short position.
There are always exceptions though and I have heard of circumstances where you are forced to cover a position.
There has ben some debates on the CFON thread as to what happens when the stock falls below $ 5 - now the stock is no longer marginable and you might now receive a margin call.
