What are you saying? That they expensed MSN-generated losses as "R&D" because they used MSN as a proving ground for Active-X? That's what it sounds like. Please correct this impression if it is wrong.

And what way is that?

The problem I have with this is that when Microsoft brags about spending X billion dollars a year on R&D, which is some huge percentage of total sales, it sounds like a sign of genuine stength. "Boy, with all that money going into R&D, they are going to really be a force to be reckoned with in the future." My fear is that, it may turn out that, when, when you look behind the facade (assuming anyone outside the company ever CAN look behind the facade), it turns out that "R&D" includes a lot of things, like losses on MSN and IE, that really should not be called R&D, but something else. Then all of a sudden the multibillion dollar figure doesn't sound so impressive any more. Then it sounds like they are using their R&D budget to cover up their losses and weaknesses.

How do we know this is not what is going on?

Your response is welcomed.
