Of particular interest, I visited, Osicom, JDS Fitel, Lucent, Pirelli, Fore, NEC, Ciena, Cambrian, and RHK. Short haul market comments range from "Here right now and getting hot (JDS Fitel) to 2 years away (Pirelli)". Keep in mind that JDS supplies components for DWDM systems and Pirelli's entry into the short haul market can only send data 11 miles with no amps and up to 55 miles with 2 amps ($$) and is only simplex over 1 fiber. Basically, it appears that Pirelli's version of a short haul system is a long haul system modified for a short haul application.
Overall positive, particularly NEC, who indicated they are submitting bids for GigaMux to more than the original 1 potential customer (that comes directly from the NEC rep). I'll have more tomorrow evening. |
