Re: Portals All the handwringing over "portals" is some of the silliest nonsense I've seen in quite some time. It reflects a television producer's mindset where the major concern is how to best force-feed their ad content to placid couch-potato users. Sorry, but that just won't wash. The in-your-face ad model that worked in the TV era will fail miserably in the net era. If folks won't visit your site because they find it useful, then no amount of "portal" arrangements will help in anything but the shortest of short terms. SI has the model right: Plaster ads on the free stuff then offer a premium service for a fee which is also blissfully ad-free.
