NEC says pricing DRAMs to push shift to 64-megabit

TOKYO, June 11 (Reuters) - NEC Corp (TOKYO:6701) said on
Thursday it planned to set a minimum price for its 16-megabit
dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips in a bid to shift
demand toward 64-megabit DRAM chips.
The market price of 16-megabit DRAM chips had already
fallen below the cost of their manufacture, a NEC spokesman
said.
The spokesman did not give details of the current market
price or the minimum price NEC would set for its chips.
Japanese media has said 16-megabit DRAM chips were selling
for around 480 yen in May, down from 22,000 yen in early 1992.
Industry sources said other major Japanese chip makers were
also setting minimum prices for 16-megabit DRAM chips.
The spokesman said prices for NEC's 64-megabit DRAM chips
were also currently below cost, but that the situation could
improve as new technology would this year allow the company to
halve its production costs.
In May, NEC said it would double its production of
64-megabit DRAM chips to 10 million a month by the end of
December, while halving output of 16-megabit DRAM chips to four
million.
