To All: Infoseek Hosts 'The Great Web Ratings Debate,' The First Independent Forum On Measuring Internet Viewership Inconocasts' Michael Tchong to Moderate, Participants Include Media Metrix, RelevantKnowledge, Nielsen Web, and NetRatings SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Infoseek Corporation (Nasdaq: SEEK - news) is taking the lead in establishing a uniform method for measuring Internet viewership by hosting The Great Web Ratings Debate, the first independent, interactive forum addressing this topic. Representatives from the four leading Web measurement companies -- Media Metrix, RelevantKnowledge, Nielsen Web, and NetRatings, will participate in a moderated discussion regarding the challenges of establishing an industry standard for measuring Internet viewership. In what is anticipated to be a provocative and lively debate, panelists will address the benefits of their methodologies, the drawbacks they see in other approaches, and their recommendations on how to achieve more uniform and useful measurements across the Internet market.
In two separate events spanning the nation, one in San Francisco and one in New York, fundamental issues will be raised that affect anyone selling, buying or building properties on the Web. Advertisers, Internet companies, and analysts will have the opportunity to interact with panelists, as well as moderator Michael Tchong, Editor-in-Chief of The Iconocast newsletter.
''Viewership ratings and measurement have a major impact on the industry, from how the Internet is perceived as a mainstream media, to how Wall Street values Internet companies, to how our customers measure the value of their marketing investments,'' said Beth Haggerty, Infoseek's vice president of worldwide advertising sales. ''Developing uniform measurement standards is good for everyone, and we're taking this opportunity to surface the issues and challenge the industry to pull together on this.''
Infoseek was one of the first companies on the Internet to offer online marketing services to advertisers. In addition to championing a uniform standard for viewership measurement, the company has been at the forefront in establishing anti-SPAM policies and procedures to protect their millions of viewers.
The San Francisco debate will be held at the Spectrum Gallery on Harrison Street on June 11. The New York debate takes place on June 23 at Lot 61 on West 21st Street. Both events begin at 4:00 PM and end at 7:00 PM. There is no charge and a reception follows.
