Eagle -2: Lowe's Spokesman Says Has No Knowledge Of Talks

CHARLOTTE (Dow Jones)--Shares of Eagle Hardware & Garden Inc. (EAGL) took off Thursday, rising 12% on six-times normal volume with some industry watchers pointing to renewed speculation that Lowe's Cos. Inc. (LOW) might be buying the chain.

Others said institutional buyers might be snatching up shares as a way to buy into the home-improvement sector while market leaders Home Depot Inc. (HD) and Lowe's Cos. are trading at higher valuations.

Eagle Hardware Chief Financial Officer Ronald Maccarone wouldn't comment on whether the company was in takeover talks or on the market speculation.

"There's no news," he told Dow Jones.

Carson Anderson, head of Lowe's investors relations, told Dow Jones he had no knowledge of the company bidding for or being in talks to acquire Eagle.

Shares of Renton, Wash.,-based Eagle recently traded up 2 3/8 at 21 3/8 on 2.8 million shares. Average daily volume is 414,086 shares.
