Sorry, my keyboard stopped working before I finished that post.
The regime is fairly corrupt; you can do literally nothing without
a bribe in Russia (sadly, that was always true)
In addition, how else can one explain the fact
that the former state property is owned now by former communists
who happened to be close to the government at various stages?
A lot was written about corruption of various leaders (including
Chubais, whom the West just loves), so ordinary people just
see this as stealing. As a result, they are very reluctant (to
put it politely) to pay taxes to such a government (I would
say NOTHING about current government, but people are still
reluctant). The western
banks probably also know about it, so they are reluctant to lend
more. I hope this (corruption) will gradually go
away as the country progresses.
As for stocks and TRF - they are very cheap.
But the trend is currently
down, the commodities are weak, the yields (and rates) are high,
and the country so far slides more and more into crisis. We'll see
if there will be a bounce now from the recent lows. -Vi
