Missing Digit

Here's a cool trick, which I will explain more fully in a later post. For now, I invite anyone interested to play along.

To participate, perform the following steps:

1. Pick any positive integer. e.g., 3298458

2. Rearrange the digits into any other order. e.g., 4825839

3. Subtract the smaller number from the larger. e.g., 4825839 - 3298458 = 1527381

4. Drop any non-zero digit from the result and list the remaining digits in any order. e.g., 112378 (dropping the 5)

Knowing only the digits listed in step 4, I can tell you which digit you dropped. Please try it.
