Hi Bill,

To tell the truth, I've never been all that impressed with Windows 95 and the blue screen demo Gates did with Windows 98 didn't impress me enough to rush out to get on the waiting list for the upgrade. Then again I like Netscape 3.01 better than Communicator or IE, so I'm probably the wrong person to ask. I have a pretty healthy respect for Microsofts marketing muscle and there is a large enough percentage of the population that believes that new is better. The last news I saw on the subject said the release had been moved up a few weeks to June 12. Don't quote me on the date since I'm going on memory and I've only been following it kind of loosely. I do think there is some pent up demand that will boost computer sales for awhile. The PR fluff I've seen on TV always shows it running games, so I don't see how it can hurt S3 being best buddies with MSFT right now. The Microsoft deal is one of the factors that has me less inclined to partake in the i740 panic along with an overall impression that the i740 was close to end of life when it was released. Unless Intel has a next generation product ready to go, I doubt the i740 will even be a product in a few months. Just a bunch of inventory floating around the grey market collecting dust. I don't think it's the same situation as the DDs getting pounded again on the heals of the WDC announcement.

If I was going to make a wild guess on the techs, I'd probably guess that we'll hit the low point fairly soon (June/July?), then see a recovery with some legs. Who knows, I might even take a look at the DDs again when the GMR heads get a little closer to production.

Regards,

Don
