ORCONET First to Activate California-Market DSL Technology; Orange County ISP First to "Light Up" Affordable California-Wide DSL Backbone

[[Anyone know about these folks? It sounds as though they are gearing up to be a last mile supplier for FON's ION offering... ]]

Business Editors and High-Tech Writers

ORANGE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 8, 1998--ORCONET, a full-service business-to-business communications and Internet Service Provider (ISP), Monday announced it has activated its exclusive high-speed data access capabilities for Southern California.

Businesses and Internet users can immediately sign up for affordable Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology used for e-mail, data, fax and other time-sensitive cyber services.

"ORCONET's service is available today in Southern California and Northern California will be activated in late June," said Maury Rosas, ORCONET's new president.

"There are no barriers to this technology. It is ready today and is very affordable," added Rosas, who brings years of experience gained with Pacific Bell, where his professional career began in the 60s.

ORCONET's announcement represents the first ISP to actually activate the long-awaited DSL service. ORCONET plans to begin marketing the service immediately to any user in the California marketplace demanding high-speed Internet access.

ORCONET will launch an aggressive pricing strategy as follows:

ADSL Circuit+ One-Year Commitment Monthly
Download/Upload Internet Access(1) Standard Internet Setup(2)
Access
384kbps/384kbps $59 $ 69 $45
1.5Mbps/384kbps $99 $129 $45

(1) Price is based on a one (1) year commitment
(2) ORCONET Setup fee waived on a one (1) year commitment
+ Applicable Telco charges not included

"Unlike other carriers that only offer regional or local DSL, we can diagnose your network and engage a California-wide service. No matter where you are located in our state, users can enjoy the high-speed service," said Rosas.

ORCONET's carrier grade technology -- that speeds Internet connectivity and transmissions by 30 percent over 56K, cable or T1 modems and uses regular telephone lines -- will support every DSL standard despite constantly evolving formats, said John P. Leon, network development officer.

"Our network operations are capable of supporting all 10 DSL formats as they come available," said Leon. "Our customers will not have to worry about speedy connectivity -- which frees more time for their own business -- it's a given."

ORCONET's long-term value plan is simple: Offer compatible, "future-proofed" DSL-based technology over existing telephone wires through a statewide backbone. ORCONET's backbone network utilizes Asynchronous Transmission Mode (ATM) services across Packet Over Sonet (POS). Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) optimizes routes across multiple independent Internet backbones, providing the shortest path routing for all Internet traffic. The result: Fast and efficient business communications connectivity.

"We can now activate a powerful communications network for business users of any size. Our network can expand and respond quickly and it will reduce the telecommunications costs for our customers," said Rosas.

Marv Bain, chairman of ORCONET, has spent years providing Internet service to customers of his charter company, Circuit Image Systems, and realized the market was poised to support more efficient business systems.

"Our customers' business success is our business," Bain said. "It's about time the technology matured and we are equipped to provide fast solutions to every market segment. From schools to civil agencies, large private companies to publicly traded corporate giants, ORCONET is a value-added carrier."

ORCONET was founded in September 1995 by Bain, who is president and chief executive officer of Circuit Image Systems in Orange. Bain has positioned the company to meet the business demands for higher speed Internet access and turnkey communication connectivity and technical support.
