>> Can anyone shed some light on what's going on in Korea. I've been seriously thinking about investing Korea lately. Seems like Korea is doing everything right: << Mike - I don't know many details on Korea , but I definitely like the fact that the new president , Kim , seems to be a straight shooter who is very opposed to the typical cronyist , corrupt kleptocracy model that has created all the problems in these Asian countries. That is a real long-term plus for Korea , if he can stay in power and implement real reform of the basic economic model. Koreans are every bit as industrious , frugal , and motivated as the Japanese or anyone else. They will repair their problems and succeed eventually. The question , of course , is when to take the plunge. It may be too early - even the esteemed John Templeton was dead wrong early this year on his market call. A final note - if China devalues , which is looming as a larger possibility day by day , all bets are off as to how bad things could get. Some commentators are already accepting this as virtually inevitable. Gary Shilling came out Weds. with that view , and he's a pretty well-informed guy with a good sense of how these things play out , and lots of experience. Who knows? |
