Microsoft Corp., based in Redmond, Wash., and the largest software producer, supports the proposed rule. "We've always been in favor of not getting out ahead of yourself in terms of recognizing revenue" said Michael Brown, Microsoft's chief financial officer. Microsoft recently added $91 million to its pile of deferred revenue, which already totaled $651 million at the end of its fiscal year on Sept. 4. "We reported that amount because we haven't delivered the products to complete our contracts," Mr. Brown said.
