Charles, you are correct about Hawaii's economy being slow right now. We are in a recession here. Bankruptcy rates are at an all time high. Tourism from Asia is way down due to the the faltering Asian economies and the poor currency exchange rate.

The oil business (virtual monopoly) is thriving however. The refineries are gouging the public big-time here. During the recent decline in crude oil prices, absolutely NONE of the savings was passed along to the consumer at the pump. I am paying $1.92 per gallon for premium gasoline. Diesel is is a whopping $1.99 per gallon now!

Maybe a GRNO machine would be successful on Oahu, where the population is over 800,000. I live on Maui, where the population is probably too small (less than 100,000).

As far as air pollution is concerned, of course we have the cleanest, clearest skies in the world, thanks to our perpetual cleansing trade winds. A major exception to this is during occassional light southerly wind conditions, we get air pollution in the form of a heavy haze of from the active volcano on the Big Island. So far no one has been able to legislate the activities of the volcano goddess, Madam Pele.

Aloha,
Bruce

p.s. Although we sometimes bitch and moan about the high cost of living here, we generally shrug it of as the "Price of Paradise".
