Japan was officially declared in recession after their markets were closed. I doubt if that market has discounted the worst to stage a rally on Monday.
This 2PM rebound here is perhaps due to what you said OR
in anticipation of a rally in Japan. Yes, rally.
In any case, the shorts appear to be running for the high ground.
