This is true as far as it goes. The part that is left out is that the buyer gets to set the price they are willing to pay. For the most part the price is set by supply/demand. There are definitely minor intrigues being played out which influence supply/demand. The advent of the ECN has limited market maker machinations to manipulate the price to a minimum.
