Baxter Agrees to Acquire Somatogen, Recasting the race for blood substitutes

Baxter International Inc. said it agreed to aquire biotechnology company Somatogen Inc. for a least $190 million in stock, a move that will signifacantly recast the race toward creating blood substitutes for use in surgery and trauma care.

Baxter, of Deerfield Ill. also agreed to pay up to 42 million in cash to Somatogen shareholders over the next nine years. depending on future sales of Somatogen products.
