Steve, I heard that kind of talk before. Remember MIPS and the SGI hype. Well here is the reality:
...
SGI has quietly scrapped ambitious plans for its MIPS processors.
SGI has already seen the writing on the wall, according to sources close to the company. SGI publicly makes no bones about its plans for an aggressive push into the Windows-Intel workstation market. Later this year, SGI will start making Windows-Intel workstations based around the next-generation "Slot 2" Pentium II processor and Microsoft's Windows NT operating system.
...
Citing a decrease in demand, Microsoft (MSFT) will discontinue Windows NT development efforts for the MIPS RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) platform.
...
NEC, has decided to stop making MIPS systems beyond the current NT 4.0 release. NEC will continue to make Intel-based systems, a market it has entered only recently.
