Browser Speed

I have to say though that Netscape has been very slow for me. It sometimes just freezes up for short periods before continuing to load a site. I have thought it was worldnet routing that was the problem or just heavy traffic on the net. Still don't know for sure.

Bob, I have two ISP', Worldnet and GTE. I also use IE and NS. I have both setups on each of two computers.

On my Aptiva Pentium 90 with 16 MB RAM, 28.8 modem the surfing experience reminds me of walking through molasses. It is the same for NS 4.x and IE 3.x. Sometimes Worldnet slows down and sometimes GTE slows down, it's a wash between the two for speed in my systems. (GTE is a pain for posting. If you compose a post that takes you more than 10 min +/- to write they disconnect you. Sometimes I have to reboot to recover).

I added 64 MB RAM to the Aptiva and it helped a little but it is still slow.

The Compaq Pentium 200 MMX, 48 MB RAM, 33 Modem uses the same browsers and ISP's but is significantly faster. I do not know why.

I have three guesses for my own system prioritized as follows:

1) The Aptiva has no cache ( I do not know if the Compaq has cache)

2) Modem ...There may be more to it than 28 vs 33. I download a lot of data collectors. If I choose a faster baud rate the data collector starts downloading data faster and then slows down significantly. My point is I do not believe all 33 (or 28.8) modems are created equal.

3) Processor speed

Browser Speed and SI

In the past I have compared Netscape 3.x to IE 3.x for thread reading. I do not remember the specifics but Netscape was about 20 percent faster than IE for downloading SI posts. (older versions) IE 4.? does not work well with my system, I will probably try it when I configure a new machine. I tried IE 4.? and failed.
