As local-access competition grows in the United States and around the world, the market for optical access networks should quickly grow from $76 million this year to $1 billion in 2003, according to a new report from Pioneer Consulting, Cambridge, Mass., titled "Optical Access Networks: WDM and Optical Networking for Local Loop and Cable TV Applications." The report predicts that local-access providers will deploy dense wave division multiplexing systems into the distribution loop, where cable modem and digital subscriber line-based access services will be straining existing networks to capacity.
