Steve,

no one is buying the expensive PIIs and the low-end is starting to go to the K6 and GX. Seems Intel has a tough road ahead. SMACK!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't forget the Xeon line. I think Xeon line will bring big bucks to Intel. A lot of people worship their servers, and are willing to sacrify thousands of dollars at the altar.

When their users complain that the network speed sucks, they say they did all they could. It is a lot easier than upgrading the network itself. Also, a lot of people don't realise that more memory would have helped a lot more than faster CPU.

I don't mean to say that Xeon is going to be an excelent chip. If I could buy the 2MB L2 version for $300, I would buy it tomorrow.

I am wondering how long it will take for 450 MHz 2MB L2 Xeon to get to $300. If it had competition, it would take a year. Without competition, the price will probably not fall much.

I wouldn't be surprised if Intel started to give away Celerons at a loss, just to make life miserable for AMD, IDT and NSM, and make all of the profit on the Xeon line.

Joe
