SYDNEY--Australian telephone giant Telstra said it was keen to provide international Internet telephony services, although the service would undercut current margins in its traditional telephone service.

"There is more upside for us to provide cheaper Internet-based international calls, even though the downside for us is decreasing margins in [international] prices," Telstra group managing director Peter Shore said at a business luncheon.

Shore told reporters after giving a speech to the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia that Telstra was currently trying out Internet-based telephony services, but added that no time frame was planned for an Internet telephony launch.

Telstra is Australia's largest telecommunications carrier, with more than A$16 billion in annual sales.

Rival Australian communications groups have already launched Internet telephony services. Internet services group OzEmail said last month that it had 15,000 Internet telephony customers.
