In those days it was a fight to see if AOL or Compuserve or whatever would be the front end. Microsoft was developing MSN as their gateway service, and that's why you see the Setup MSN icon on the desktop, while everybody else is in a folder. But that had to do with which pay service was going to win, and I believe MSFT wanted the Windows desktop to lead you into MSN. Taking over the browser was a different and later issue, but if you didn't say the name of the thing being discussed the two could be confused.

Anybody remember exactly when MSFT bought their browser (from Spyglass was it?)
