WASHINGTON -- The largest utilities lack
contingency plans for the year 2000 software glitch,
said the chairman of the Senate special committee on
the century date on Friday.

The year 2000 problem is the inability of many
applications, processors, and embedded chips to
distinguish between the 20th and 21st centuries. This is
because computers have traditionally stored years as
two-figure dates, rather than four-figure dates.

Sen. Bob Bennett (R-Utah), who released results of a
survey of the 10 largest energy companies by his
committee, said he was worried "about the very real
prospects of power shortages as a consequence of the
millennial date change."
