jg,

This is an ANCIENT virus hoax that has been travelling around the internet for YEARS, in various forms.

The email message you received IS THE VIRUS! A typical method that a virus causes problems is by clogging up system resources by exponentially replicating itself - e.g. it creates many new copies of itself, eventually using up most of the space on your hard drive. This behavior degrades the performance of your equipment.

The email you received is a virus. It replicates itself exponentially, because every user who receives it sends it out to a whole bunch of people out of genuine concern. The end result is that the internet is clogged up by hundreds of thousands of copies of this "virus" going back and forth. This degrades the performance of the internet.

Besides the technical fact that there is no mechanism for a text file (i.e. an email) to make your computer do ANYTHING, this type of virus warning is a well-documented hoax.

However, it is important to remember that programs or MS Office macros ATTACHED to emails can do malicious things to your computer, but only if you detach and run them.

Just doing my bit in the war against viruses!<g>
