Techie, isn't the Celeron processor Intel's latest incarnation of the Pentium MMX series? My understanding is that it is not intended to be a competitor of the Pentium II, and it is aimed mainly at first time retail buyers. If that's the case, I would think that it would be more of a threat to companies like Compaq which have squarely targeted that market. Another question: if, as I suspect, these all in one boards are not upgradable aren't they relegated to throw-away products, like disposable razor blades?

One other point that I think may have been overlooked. Dell does very little R&D, relying mainly on the work of its value chain partners such as Intel. That means that there is little or no set-up or switching costs when moving from one processor or motherboard to another. If you couple that with the extremely low inventories (which Meredith expects to go to 4 days!!) you see virtually zero risk to Dell if they find that Celeron-based machines are either not selling or aren't as profitable as hoped.
