In those days it was a fight to see if AOL or Compuserve or whatever would be the front end. Microsoft was developing MSN as their gateway service, and that's why you see the Setup MSN icon on the desktop,... Actually, it wasn't a case of being the front end to the internet, it was a case of being the whole shebang. AOL, Compuserve, and MSN were all competitors with the internet. It was only later that Compuserve and MSN went to 'internet only' service. So whatever Ballmer had to say about the internet 1993, it quite possibly had nothing to do with MSN.
