Actually, it wasn't a case of being the front end to the internet, it was a case of being the whole shebang. AOL, Compuserve, and MSN were all competitors with the internet. It was only later that Compuserve and MSN went to 'internet only' service. So whatever Ballmer had to say about the internet 1993, it quite possibly had nothing to do with MSN.
