Was your Aptiva using a "windows" modem? I bet it might have been. Lots of cheap modems offload the processing to the CPU so that they can save a few $ in cost. This might explain why the CPU utilization was so high. Otherwise, there's no reason at all this should be happening, even on a much weaker system than your Aptiva. You can check by seeing if it's able to work under dos or OS/2. I'm sure there's a more rigorous way to check, but short of it saying something in the manual, I'm not sure offhand what it would be.

Another reason to try another modem.

I very much doubt that the jostling of the tower would be causing intermittant bad rights, unless you whacked it pretty hard during an actual write. Even then, I think it would be more likely to crash then and there, rather than write bad registry entries. But Sean or Spots may have a more informed reaction to this.
