Yes! You are TOTALLY missing something.
Sure, those cutesy little Java applets that you see embedded in web pages run fine with a software JVM. That's fine when you are using worthless Java applets for a small touch of animation.
However, there is no way in hell Java will ever be more than a language for tiny, decorative applets without Java running on a hardware platform, that it can actually communicate with....Enter, Java chips.
Can anyone here dare to argue that there is a benefit of "openness" when your hardware is Pico Java Chip-based, rather than x86 based?
In fact, many very strong arguments can be made for the x86 platform. Most notably, is the fact that x86 is ubixtious (sp?), and so is Windows. Not only that, but the entire installed based of applications is already designed for the Wintel platform. So what's wrong with it then? The problem is, that everyone loves to hate Microsoft (and soon, Intel). With that, Java is "good."
If you ask me, Java is the greatest scandal in the history of the computing world. Give MSFT some credit, at least they are "open" enough with their intentions of dominating the technological revolution. SUNW/JavaSoft, however, have in intricate cover-up going, where they will use the veil of "openess." Quite a masterminded scheme, but a few people here (me, Reginald, and Richard) have figured it out. The rest of you are too blinded by your own hatred toward Microsoft, to see the wool over your eyes.
So there!
