Yes, that is correct. A criminal who knows he is about to be caught usually gets nervous, and as a result, does stupid stuff. At the root of it, basically, is fear.

Also, a criminal who succeeds at his crime over a length of time begins to get a little too confident, or as you say, thinks he is one step ahead of the game. They can start to think that they are "untouchable", and as a result they too do stupid stuff. At the root of this, basically, is arrogance.

LOL Just a little criminal psychology on a Saturday Nite...
