GM, it looks like the article should have been titled, "A History of Windows from the viewpoint of Microsoft".
Generally, from what I've read, when people describe the evolution of GUI or windows, they normally say it started with Xerox, who developed the idea of GUI (and a lot of other ideas the company failed to capitalize on. Instead, the people who came up with the ideas went out on their own and started their own companies, like COMS).
Then, AAPL came along and stole the idea of GUI from Xerox (or, at least, AAPL made money off the idea.
Then, MSFT stole the idea of GUI from AAPL, because it only made sense to make the PC easier to use, even if it did take MSFT a long time to develop the GUI software into a form its customers were happy with.
Xerox sued AAPL (for stealing their ideas) and lost.
AAPL sued MSFT (for stealing their ideas) and lost.
That's my interpretation of what I've read, anyway.
But yes, two empires were born: MSFT and INTC, based on IBM's development of the PC. IBM could have been king of the hill, still today; instead, a lot of the wealth and power flowed to MSFT and INTC.
Best wishes,
