And the rest were history, such as IBM's first choice for the OS was IDR's (Intergalactic Digital Research) proven CP/M. I heard IBM execs showed up at the Kildall's house for their meeting on acquiring rights to use CP/M and were sent away by Gary's wife. The story goes that Gary Kildall and wife had decided not to sign the standard IBM non-disclosure contracts. Kildall's wife later explained that they simply needed more time for lawyers to review the forms. Chagrined, the IBM exec's mentioned this problem to Bill Gates whom they had approached to supply Microsoft's BASIC language. Bill said, "oh we can get a DOS for you."
