A little over a year ago, when people were just beginning to catch on to the idea of using the Internet to place long-distance calls, experts predicted that Internet telephony could one day threaten to take business away from long-distance giants like MCI, SRINT, or AT&T. At the time, the idea was effectively scoffed at by the telecommunications companies. Today, the Internet telephony "joke" isn't so funny.
