Hi R1, Interesting article for anyone interested......... You can find the whole article on WWW.CCNMAG.COM JUNE ISSUE >>WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR INTENET TELEPHONY?<<
A little over a year ago, when people were just beginning to catch on to the idea of using the Internet to place long-distance calls, experts predicted that Internet telephony could one day threaten to take business away from long-distance giants like MCI, SRINT, or AT&T. At the time, the idea was effectively scoffed at by the telecommunications companies. Today, the Internet telephony "joke" isn't so funny. >>What the big telecommunications companies (telcos) didn't count on were improvements in Internet telephony that today make it essentially as good as using a regular phone line. They also didn't consider the fact that Internet telephony wouldn't always have to involve a computer, opening up services to those who don't even own their own PC. >>Today, as more and more companies have begun offering long distance services over the Internet-at rates less than half what the powerful telecos offer-people have begun jumping on the Internet telephony bandwagon. Suddenly, the telcos are getting nervous.<<GGG>> >>Because of improved technology in the past year the quality of these calls is much better then they were>> >>The rates average 30% less than telcos>> >>Though some say the Internet is not ready for the demands telephony will place on it, recent studies indicate that Internet telephony is just getting warmed up. An International Company (IDC) has studies that say -- the use of the Net to transmit voice calls internationally will grow from a $600 MILLION BUISNESS IN 1997, TO A $20.5 BILLION BUISNESS BY THE YEAR 2002! AND FOR DOMESTIC CALLS, REVENUES ARE PREDICTED TO REACH $3.9 BILLION IN 2002, UP FROM $100 MILLION IN 1997! >>As Internet telephony takes off, don't expect the telcos to take it lying down. AT&T already has PLANS for what they call their World Net Voice service, MCI also says it has an Internet telephony OFFERING IN THE WORKS!>>
Personally I found this interesting reading and felt I should share it with our Rocketeers!
