Meathead,

I lose my patience with posters like techie. They do not understand the range and depth of potential applications of computers.

One of the many problems with the dooms day market projections is that they assume that the values that the market is addressing with products is static. The market is actually very dynamic and goes through periods of revolution, evolution and consolidation. The companies that survive and prosper are the ones which are open to revolutionary and evolutionary change and adapt to meet the changing values of the market place.

There will always be a need for more computing resources and the applications the filter down into the mass market are dependent of the raw computing power being available at a reasonable price. I see no limit to the useful applications of computers as cost effective computational power and storage is made available.

IBM thought they would sell only a few computers back when they started. They were very wrong. They were wrong again in the early 80's when they ceded control of the OS to Bill Gates and CPQ took the lion share of the PC business from them. So even the most knowledgeable companies have underestimated the demand for computer resources.

The PC box industry is in a period of expansion and consolidation now. The technical phase is rapidly evolving. You never know when the next revolution is going to begin.
