Or was it shots? It almost sounded like the backfiring of a motor. Muffy ran to the window in time to hear one last, loud report from the engine of the motorcycle, which to her surprise, and the surprise of the discomfited police officers who looked helplessly after it, she saw speeding down the wet street, TED at the wheel...or at least the handsome stranger who had called himself "TED." (Muffy thought of his name not as "Ted," but as "TED," in capitals, because when the gentleman (if indeed he was a gentleman) had pronounced it to her, he had for some reason shouted, the name -- and the name only -- at the top of his lungs!)

As Muffy turned away from the window, she noticed that on the floor, near to where she had so recently been examining the contents of TED's pants, lay a single piece of paper.
