Hi Jim,

There are many general formulas for calculating die per wafer. There is a lot of room for error in most of them. The cost of a wafer is mostly dependent upon capacity utilization and the depreciation/cap ex. schedule of the company. Anyway, here's ONE general formula(wasted space probably differs depending on the process?):

I believe assuming a cost per wafer of between $2000 to $2500 for AMD may be correct, based on what foundries charge, but this may be way off.
