-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday June 11, 8:55 pm Eastern Time Mentor penile implant sales soften MINNEAPOLIS, June 11 (Reuters) - Sales of penile implants by Mentor Corp., a Santa Barbara, Calif.-based maker of medical products, are down since the April launch of the impotence drug Viagra, the company said Thursday. ''We expect to see a temporary lull in sales, followed by an upsurge,'' said Mentor Chief Executive Christopher Conway in remarks to investors at a conference here hosted by investment bank Piper Jaffray.
Mentor makes breast implants, liposuction systems, prostate cancer treatments, replacement eye lenses and penile implants, among other products.
Penile implant sales rose in the second half of fiscal 1998 ended March 31, stimulated by rising interest in impotence treatment ahead of the introduction of Viagra by drug giant Pfizer Inc. (PFE - news) of New York, Conway said.
The sales slump that followed the launch is expected to reverse as patients discover the drug does not always work and seek other treatments, Conway said.
