Smart cards coming to home computers June 12, 1998 2:31 AM EDT USA Today, June 10, 1998 Genplus (France) introduced the GemSAFE kit to protect computerized data, replacing password-protected software for Internet browsers, PCs, electronic mail and databases. This is a sign that smart-card readers may be used as standard equipment on home PCs. A reader can protect home and corporate PCs, for someone can get access to a protected database or PC only by inserting the smart card and using a personal ID number. Visa projects that of all Visa cards, one-third will have built-in electronic chips by 2002. Electronic commerce is forecast to reach $37.5 bil in 2002.
