ATLANTA--(BUSINESS-WIRE)--June 15, 1998--Businesses around the world are now a mouse click away from using a delivery vehicle that is highly secure, easy to use, immediate and certain to greatly impact the way they do business. UPS today announced the global availability of UPS Document Exchange, the highly praised and much anticipated Internet delivery service.
Available at www.exchange.ups.com, UPS Document Exchange is a suite of delivery and information management services that industry watchers believe will transform the way companies send and receive their most critical business information.
In addition, UPS announced that it has made agreements with six leading technology providers -- Adobe, Compaq Computer Corporation, iName Inc., MindSpring, QUALCOMM and VeriSign -- to expand both the channels of access for customers to UPS Document Exchange and the technologies that enable the use of the Internet delivery option. The partners will facilitate the Internet business connection so that using the service is simple and seamless.
"The customer response has been overwhelming since we first announced our plans this spring to offer UPS Document Exchange," said Dale Hayes, UPS vice president of electronic commerce marketing. "This is an important step toward relieving customer anxiety about doing business electronically and we expect it to change the way business is conducted on a global scale."
UPS Document Exchange currently provides a choice of two Internet delivery services, UPS OnLine Courier and UPS OnLine Dossier, which have distinct features and levels of security. The services are supported by alliances announced earlier with Tumbleweed Software and NetDox, Inc., two leading providers of secure digital delivery solutions.
UPS OnLine Courier, which is available by downloading software or directly from the web site, is built on an open environment. This allows customers to send documents to anyone, regardless of the e-mail software, operating system or hardware being used by either sender or receiver. Customers have several security options, including password protection and encryption.
UPS OnLine Dossier, an insured service, features a unique double encryption process to provide the highest level of encryption and verification technology available globally for maximum security on a public network. It authenticates identities using digital certificates, which are required by both sender and receiver, and third party validation.
Rates per transaction within North America range from $1.00 to $7.00, and from North America to any other location range from $1.50 to $12.00. Volume discounts, which are available to any UPS Document Exchange customer, bring the cost to as low as 60 cents per transaction within North America. Global pricing information will be available on the web site (www.exchange.ups.com).
Both UPS Document Exchange services provide full visibility real- time tracking, archiving, delivery confirmation, password protection options and are protected by a minimum of 128-bit encryption while the files are on the server. The software is free and services will be billed on a transactional basis, with charges according to service used, level of security, destination and file size.
UPS OnLine Courier is available to every country except North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya and Cuba. Because of import/export regulations regarding strong encryption, at this time OnLine Dossier is available for customers located in a restricted number of countries: Australia, Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, South Africa, Sweden, the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Currently the service is available in English and billing is in U.S. dollars. However, it will be available in multiple languages and currencies in the near future.
UPS is the world's largest express carrier and package delivery company, offering an unmatched array of products and services. With headquarters in Atlanta, the company operates in more than 200 countries and territories, has been named by Fortune Magazine as the most admired company in the transportation industry for 15 consecutive years, and has received two Computerworld Smithsonian Awards for technology leadership.
