Robert,

A relevant question is how well the M2 and K6 can scale. I get the impression that Intel started the Pentium Pro at a mhz well below what even present technology can support. As new fabrication processes come online at Intel we can expect the Pentium Pro core to scale to 300, 400, and possibly even 500 Mhz. What happens to M2 and K6 then? AMD's 100mhz and 120mhz 486 chips were nice Pentium alternatives until the 133, 166, and 200mhz Pentiums arrived. Now AMD 486 machines make nice doorstops.

Some time back it was thought that the PowerPC would be a threat to INTC. The scalability of the Pentium rendered that argument a joke. I think we will see the same fate befall Cyrix and AMD. Today it looks like their chips can compete. In a few short months though a series of stunning announcements from INTC (e.g. a 400 Mhz Pro) could render them obsolete.
