She hadn't even gotten to the bottom of the stairs when she heard the wailing of her precious Shorty. He had never been left alone before, and Muffy's quick exit had frightened him. What a pitiful sound!

Hesitating, Muffy thought, "Geez, now what do I do? I know owning pets carries with it a responsibility, but right now I have other things to do. Aw, let him whine."

With that, she ran outside, determined to get to her destination as quickly as possible.

She hailed a cab. One pulled over almost immediately. What a coincidence ... it was Norma again. "But, I thought you quit this job", said Muffy. "Not yet", said Norma. "But soon."

As Muffy was getting into the cab, a police cruiser came racing up the street with its siren blaring and lights flashing. Muffy and Norma both watched as Jeff screeched to a halt right in front of the cab, blocking its way.

Jeff and his partner got out of the cruiser almost simultaneously.

"All right", said Jeff. "Who around here owns a dog? We've had another complaint about dog droppings. We're going to put an end to this once and for all."

Jeff recognized Muffy. There eyes met briefly. He blushed and turned away. Then, he looked back at her. He spied the PC.

Then, he heard the dog wailing upstairs.
