Ascend would love to be taken out by a bigger player, but there aren't that many out there.

This is true. Most on this thread feel LU covets ASND. I waver on this. But there is also ERICY, NOKA, and ALA. TLAB would be merger of equals and might be the only one that the market might like.

Cascade was sure that Cisco wanted to buy them and they bought Stratacom instead.

Likely CSCO's biggest blunder ever. They paid $4B for Stratacom, when CSCC could have been had much cheaper. Its clear now that CSCC has eaten STRM's lunch selling to carriers in ATM switching, a biz CSCO now realizes is crucial. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20. Also remember that CSCO at one point owned 20% of CSCC, and divested it before buying STRM. Yes, this was a colossal blunder, IMO.

CSCO is certainly the 800 lbs gorilla. LU is trying to be. ASND will not be able compete against CSCO forever, but for the next year at least, they can do very well. Sometime before this year is up they will be bought, and it will probably be LU, IMO.
