( BW)(SGS-THOMSON-MICROELECT)(STM) SGS-THOMSON'S sales in Asia Pacific
surpass US $1 billion

Business Editors

SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 26, 1996--SGS-THOMSON
Microelectronics announces that it has exceeded US$1 billion in sales
to third parties in the Asia Pacific region - excluding Japan - since
the beginning of calendar year 1996.
Mr. Jean-Claude Marquet, Corporate VP and President of Asia
Pacific, said, "Passing the US$1 billion mark has set an important
milestone for SGS-THOMSON in the Asia Pacific region as well as the
entire corporation. SGS-THOMSON has been in Asia Pacific since 1969
and we are pleased that the Company has grown in tandem with the
fastest growing region in the world. The milestone illustrates that
our product strategy is in tune with the market here and we are
acknowledged as one of the leaders in the industry.
"In a market which is declining compared with 1995, such results
would mean a gain of more than 1% in market share in the region and
will enable SGS-THOMSON to move up a few positions in the Asia
Pacific semiconductor rankings," added Jean-Claude Marquet.
For the last 5 years, SGS-THOMSON's revenues in the Asia Pacific
region have grown by an average of 36% per year. In 1991, Asia
Pacific billings were less than US$250 million. In less than 11
months of 1996 billings have already passed US$1 billion. Similarly,
the contribution from the Asia Pacific region to SGS-THOMSON's
worldwide sales has climbed from 18% five years ago to more than 28%
on a year-to-date basis through the third quarter this year.
Describing the factors leading to its success, Jean-Claude
Marquet said: "Amidst an intensely competitive market environment,
SGS-THOMSON has been able to capitalize on its core strengths and
wide technology portfolio to establish long-term partnerships with
key players in the fields of computer peripherals such as disk
drives, printers and monitors and in advanced consumer goods like
digital satellite receivers. This has led the Company to serve some
of the leading multinational companies based in the region as well as
the growing number of home-grown companies."
Analysts have also forecasted that the Asia Pacific semiconductor
region will continue to grow faster than the rest of the world. With
its product strategy in place, SGS-THOMSON is well poised to meet the
demand in high growth areas such as the super integration program for
computers, set top boxes, and DVDs while continuing its lead and
growth in the computer peripherals market.
In Asia Pacific, SGS-THOMSON has a direct presence in Singapore,
Malaysia, Thailand, India, Australia, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and
China with the regional headquarters based in Singapore. Today,
SGS-THOMSON employs approximately 8000 people in these countries.
The company has established an integrated presence comprising a wafer
diffusion plant in Singapore with a new sub-micron wafer fab
expected to be ready at the end of 1998, and three assembly and test
facilities in Singapore, Malaysia and China. On-the-spot design and
application support are also available to serve a broad spectrum of
customers.
SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics is a global independent
semiconductor company listed on the New York Stock Exchange and on the
Bourse de Paris. It designs, develops, manufactures and markets a
broad range of semiconductor integrated circuits (ICs) and discrete
devices used in a wide variety of microelectronic applications,
including telecommunication systems, computer systems, consumer
products, automotive products and industrial automation and control
systems.
