Regarding the Social use of Viagra and Pfizer soul-searching

Viagra was certainly not marketed for the gratuitous use of thrill-seekers. Indeed the company making it, Pfizer, was so concerned about the potentially explosive social impact of a drug powerful enough to transform an anxious under-performer into a rampant stallion that the launch was preceded by much soul-searching at boardroom level. 'You have to remember that this is an old-established organisation that has built its reputation on antiseptics like TCP and treatments for things like rheumatoid arthritis and schizophrenia,' says one employee. 'They were stepping into uncharted territory by putting out a potency pill. They couldn't be sure how it would be received and that was a big risk.' Although viagra's sales have exceeded all expectations since it arrived in U.S. pharmacies in April, bosses have watched with growing concern as some of their worst fears-and others they can never have envisaged-have come to pass.
