Was the move intra- or inter- state? Different rules may apply, as well as who is the
governing regulatory authority.

It was interstate. I don't know what governing body applies. A good family friend was head of the Federal Highway Administration and now has a cabinet level appointment (not a cabinet post). I can't go too much further on this one.

Were the people who packed your goods sent/hired/dispatched by an authorized agent
of the national van line, as per an agreement you have in writing for them to provide
packing services?

The relocation was actually contracted by Coldwell Banker who is now Cendant Mobility Services who are a part of a Fortune 100 company.
(Henry Silvermans outfit that merged with CUC)
The people who packed an repacked out of storage were both from the local agent

Have you kept any damaged containers, and all containers which held damaged items?

Most of the stuff was furniture and they didn't bother to pack it in containers or even furniture pads.

Have you kept the damaged goods in the same damaged condition as received?

Yes, they sent out a "furniture repair person" to try to fix the gross damage and we told them we wanted a settlement not an attempt to fix the mess.

Did you call and ask for an independent appraiser to make an appraisal of the damage?

No, but that certainly will be necessary before we go to court.

Don't accept or endorse any payments offered until you are satisfied. Don't accept any
oral promise that another check is forthcoming.

Agree, we didn't even want them to unload with the mess in the truck, but we were guaranteed that the damage would be repaired. the moving company would not send a representative to our house before unpacking. As I said, I have a signed statement from the unloaders that 37 pieces were damaged or destroyed.
