Compaq, Microsoft Invest in Cable Modem Venture

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and Compaq Computer (CPQ) on Monday announced investments of $425 million in a high-speed online service that allows access to the Internet over cable modems. Marketed under the name Road
Runner, the service is a joint venture by Time-Warner (TWX),
Advance/Newhouse, and MediaOne. Microsoft is expected to contribute expertise in Internet, client, and server software, while Compaq will market cable-ready PCs. The two investors will each own 10 percent of the business. Road Runner reports that it has 90,000 customers for its Internet access service.
