Dave, Local move or across state lines? Were the items in storage?
If this is an agent of a Nation Wide Moving Company you need to contact the claims department at the Corp. office. Pull out the contract (Bill of laden) and check if any additional insurance was purchased. Every local or National Moving Co. carries 60 cent per lb. Liability insurance. If full coverage or RCP (replacement cost insurance) was purchased then prepare to do battle. Take plenty of pictures of all items damaged and also take pictures of the damaged cartons (very important). (Document everything) Get 2 estimates to repair (if repairable) on all the furniture items damaged. If items are of Antique appraisal quality then it's time to call a lawyer. Fill out the claim form very carefully. The value claimed is all the adjuster really cares about so inflate the amount claimed 250%. Leave the date and amount purchased blank. The idea is to get the furniture items repaired to the highest standards without debating price of repairs.

I've spent a carrier settling problems like the one you have and will be happy to help.
